August 7th: To the Highlands!

Today it was time to depart Edinburgh, making a late morning departure that allowed some intrepid explorers to venture to the nearby Royal Yacht Britannia to see how the Queen & other members of the Royal Family lived on the high seas in recent decades.
Our first destination today was the small town of Pitlochry, a popular stop on the route north with plenty of tea shops & cafes.  The town is also famous for its whisky & is home to Scotland's smallest distillery, so some of our number even managed to squeeze in a wee visit.
The journey north took us through the edges of the Cairngorms National Park, Scotland's largest.
The park is a controlled rather than pristine environment, so farming is still allowed in some areas.
One such operation is Leault Working Sheepdogs, where we made our next stop.
Always a huge hit, the sheepdogs are put through their paces by the resident shepherd - suitably gruff & unfriendly! - to many oohs & aahs.  Next visitors were invited to try their hand at sheering & then finally to feed the lambs with bottles.  All in all a great visit, especially with the sun shining through once more.

The last stop today was Inverness, known as the Capital of the Highlands & so our base for two nights.
Inverness is a small town located along the banks of the Ness River.  Our hotel was in a prime location & just a few minutes walk from our restaurant tonight, the superb Mustard Seed.  On the menu tonight?  Haggis....
